Nose Surgery Q & A

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is the medical name for nose surgery. You may need nose surgery to fix a structural defect that affects breathing, repair damage from an injury, or remove polyps, but it’s often used to make cosmetic changes.

Rhinoplasty can improve the appearance of your nose by:

  • Reducing its size
  • Straightening a crooked nose
  • Changing the bridge width
  • Correcting the size, shape, or position of your nostrils
  • Eliminating bumps or depressions on the bridge
  • Changing a large, drooping, upturned, or hooked nose tip
  • Correcting nasal asymmetry

Who is a good candidate for nose surgery?

Nose surgery can be performed on most people as long as their nasal structures are fully developed, which is around the age of 14 for girls and 16 for boys. If surgery is done before the nose matures, it can interfere with normal growth.

It’s also important to be sure you have reasonable expectations about what you’ll look like after nose surgery. During your consultation with Dr. Feagin or Dr. Owen, they’ll generate a computer image showing what you’ll look like with your new nose.

What is the difference between open and closed nose surgery?

During a closed rhinoplasty, your surgeon makes the incision inside your nose. This procedure is preferred when you have a straightforward correction or repair. In more complex cases, you may need an open rhinoplasty.

An open rhinoplasty is done by making an incision in the skin between your nostrils. Although you’ll have a scar, it’s usually subtle and barely noticeable.

No matter which type of nose surgery you have, you’ll wear a splint for six or seven days and you’ll need to plan on taking up to a week for recovery. You’ll also need to avoid vigorous activities for about six weeks.

When will you see results?

You’ll notice results right away, but you may not get the full impact until your swelling goes down, which should happen within a week. You’ll continue to see improvement in your appearance as your nose heals over the next few months.
