Liposuction: What Is It?

It is a procedure for removing fat from the body using suction. A cannula (narrow metal tube) is inserted into the area to be treated and suction removes fat. The fat is collected and can be reinjected in a fat grafting procedure or discarded. The most common uses for removed fat are buttock augmentation, facial rejuvenation and/or breast enhancement.

There are many variations on the procedure. Tumescent liposuction, which has become the industry standard, injects fluid containing anesthesia into the treated area to facilitate the removal of fat. At the Feagin & Owen Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, we use a combination of tumescent liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction (UHL) to break or lyse the fat cells, making them easier to remove without damaging other tissue in the area that is capable of resisting the ultrasonic waves. Ultrasonic liposuction uses ultrasonic waves and it is not a replacement for tumescent liposuction, but  is used in conjunction with tumescent. Drs. Feagin and Owen have the state-of-the-art in liposuction equipment.
