Advice on How to Choose Your Plastic Surgeon

If you are considering facial plastic surgery, choosing your facial plastic surgeon is the most important decision you will make to help ensure you get quality results. Therefore, it is important that you consider your decision carefully to find the right surgeon for you. Here are a few tips for choosing the best facial plastic surgeon.

Get Personal Recommendations

If you have friends or family members who have recently had facial plastic surgery, you should talk to them about their choice of surgeon. If they are happy with their surgeon, consider their recommendation. Recommendations give you a great starting place for choosing a facial plastic surgeon. Consider personal recommendations as one piece of evidence, and always make sure to ask how thoroughly the recommender evaluated the surgeon before making a decision. The weight you give the recommendation should take this into account.

Understand Board Certification

Every surgeon who has a valid medical license is certified by a medical board, but only plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). The ABPS maintains high standards in training, technical ability, and enforces regular recertification to ensure its member surgeons are current on their knowledge of the field. When you work with a plastic surgeon, you know your surgeon knows how to safely and effectively perform plastic surgery procedures. A "cosmetic surgeon" may have no formal training in plastic surgery and therefore may have only rudimentary knowledge of its techniques.

Look at Results

Results are one of the most important factors to consider in selecting your surgeon. Every facial plastic surgeon should have a before and after gallery online. These are often just the best examples, so it's important to consider the number and scope of pictures you're seeing. The more pictures, the more likely you are seeing representative examples of the surgeons work. When you get to the consultation stage, you should ask to see if there are any additional images not on the website, and you should talk to your surgeon about which images best approximate your situation.

Talk to Several Surgeons in Person

The physical results are only part of the picture in cosmetic plastic surgery. Also crucial is the psychological journey you take from self-consciousness to self-confidence in your appearance. You need to find a facial plastic surgeon who makes you feel comfortable talking about your current concerns and goals. Remember--you will be working with this surgeon for many weeks--you want to like them.

Don't Consider Price

It's very hard to do this, but if you want to pick the best facial plastic surgeon, you have to throw out price.

Remember this: you have only one face, and no amount of savings can compensate you if you get poor surgical results. Don't increase your risk of a poor result by working with a budget surgeon.

Also note that the highest price surgeon is not necessarily the best, though he may think so. A surgeon may charge a premium price, but the premium may not be reflected in the quality of the work.

There are many ways to address the affordability of plastic surgery, from insurance to financing, and there is no reason why you shouldn't get the highest quality of work from your facial plastic surgery.
