Our Procedures - Ear Reshaping Surgery

Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping Surgery)

Large, protruding ears can get unwanted attention, especially for children. For children who have been singled out for the size or projection of their ears, the comments can be harsh and biting. Children often don't know how harsh they are being to other children when they “make fun” of their protruding ears, and the consequences can be severe. Otoplasty (ear reshaping) can help children and adults to correct protruding ears so that they seem more normal and do not attract negative attention.

Everyone remembers someone they went to school with who had protruding ears.  Still today, many years after completing school, you probably still think of that persons protruding ears every time their name is mentioned. There is a negative social and intellectual stigma on people with protruding ears.

What Otoplasty Can Do

Otoplasty reshapes the ear and corrects the protrusion.  After having an otoplasty the negative connotations that go with protruding ears will be removed forever.  An otoplasty will often be covered by insurance.

Otoplasty, sometimes called ear reshaping, ear pinning, or just ear surgery, is a facial plastic surgery that improves the appearance of a person's ears. Most commonly, it is used to correct:

  • Large ears

  • Protruding ears

  • Unsatisfactory results from previous surgery

  • Correction of deformation or injury to the ear

If any of these conditions make you feel self-conscious about your appearance, you may be a good candidate for otoplasty. In addition, the best candidates for otoplasty:

  • Are at least 5 years of age

  • Are in good general health

Most people feel highly relieved and happy at the results of their otoplasty procedure.

The Otoplasty Procedure

Most often, the procedure is used to reduce the extent to which ears protrude away from the head. In the procedure, a small incision is made behind the ear and a small amount of cartilage is removed. The remaining cartilage is brought together with sutures. The ear will be reshaped in the process. An otoplasty gives a long lasting result.

During your consultation at the Feagin & Owen Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, you can discuss other variations on the procedure and which one is right for you.

Why Choose Feagin & Owen for Otoplasty Surgery?

Whether you are looking to correct the appearance of your ears or those of your child, the appearance of results are crucial. If the result isn't going to look better than the beginning appearance, the surgery is not worth it, so it's best not to pick a surgeon just because he or she is cheap. Any price is too much to pay for bad results.  Bad results are very difficult to correct.
