Common Questions

Questions About Liposuction

What Is Liposuction Surgery?

Liposuction, sometimes called suction-assisted lipoplasty, is a body contouring procedure that can remove fat from problem areas to help you achieve the figure you desire.

Can Liposuction Help Me Lose Weight?

You will lose 5 – 10 pounds with liposuction.  However, you will appear to have lost much more weight with this.  This is because the weight that is removed is in a “problem area.”  In order to get the same result in that “problem area” you would have to diet off about 20 to 25 pounds.

Should I Try to Lose Weight Before Liposuction Surgery?

Not necessarily. Ideally, your weight should be stable. Being at a stable weight helps us identify what problem areas are long-term concerns. If patients are at their stable body weight, we often encourage them to gain 5 pounds prior to surgery because it makes their “problem area” thicker and then more fat can be removed.  When you lose a few pounds by dieting, you will get an even better result.

Is Liposuction Safe?

Yes, especially if you work with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Every year, hundreds of thousands of liposuction surgery procedures are performed in this country, giving safe, great-looking results. If you periodically hear of a few cases of complications, it's because the media focuses a lot of attention on this very small number of cases, many of which are due to an inexperienced or poorly trained doctor, poor candidate selection, or an ill-equipped surgical facility.  Dr. Feagin and Dr. Owen do all of their liposuction as an outpatient at a hospital where a board-certified anesthesiologist is there with you.  It is not worth putting your safety at risk to save a few hundred dollars.

Are There Different Kinds of Liposuction?

Yes. Liposuction has been in common use for many years and is continuing to develop. However, the most common type of liposuction surgery procedure has been around for many years. Tumescent liposuction is popular because it is safe and effective. Other kinds include ultrasound-assisted liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, and laser-assisted liposuction. No type is inherently better than the others, but in special circumstances, one might be recommended over the others. At the Feagin & Owen Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Center, we offer two types of ultrasound-assisted liposuction surgery, which helps us identify the best one for use in your specific situation. The VASER is one type and the Lysonix is the other type.

Is Liposuction the Same as a Tummy Tuck?

No. Although liposuction and tummy tuck are both body contouring procedures, they are very different. Liposuction removes fat alone from treated areas and can be used on many parts of the body. A tummy tuck (also called abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure that targets excess skin and lax muscles in the abdominal area. Usually, liposuction is done with an abdominoplasty, but an abdominoplasty is not always done with liposuction. During your consultation, we will evaluate your concerns, goals, and body to determine which is the right procedure for you.
