Liposuction Surgery: Everything You Need to Know

When you have troublesome areas on your body, unwanted fat can be difficult to remove with diet and exercise alone. Liposuction surgery is a great option if you want to remove the fat from these areas quickly and effectively, changing your overall physique. However, many people have questions about liposuction surgery, such as possible results and total costs. Here's all you need to know about the procedure.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is the process of removing fat from problem areas of the body by using a suction technique. Many patients choose to use the fat for other procedures, such as a breast enhancement or buttock augmentation. Otherwise, the fat is simply discarded.

Liposuction can be used on most areas of the body, including:

Ultrasonic Liposuction

There are different types of liposuction methods available, and tumescent liposuction is generally the standard. However, newer methods such as ultrasonic liposuction are now available, and the surgeons at Feagin & Owen utilize these methods when they best fit the patient's situation. Ultrasonic liposuction actually causes fat cells to dissolve so they're easier to remove. There are two ultrasonic liposuction machines: a more powerful one for larger areas and a VASER machine for areas that need a slighter touch.

Liposuction Recovery

Most liposuction patients are discharged the same day of their procedure after proper monitoring. Before you're discharged to return home, your surgeon will give you instructions for your post-op care. Patients may experience swelling and slight bruising after the procedure, but compression garments can ease these symptoms. Many patients return to work within a few days if their duties aren't strenuous or physically demanding. Swelling may subside after a few weeks, or it may take a bit longer; the length for total recovery greatly depends on various factors that your surgeon can discuss with you during a consultation.

Liposuction Results: Before and After

Liposuction results vary for each patient, but it's usually a very noticeable difference in the body's shape. Most patients choose liposuction not because they wish to lose weight in general but because they wish to target a specific area (or areas), changing their actual body shape. After liposuction, the body's shape shouldn't go back as long as the patient maintains a stable weight. Liposuction Cost

It's generally not a good idea to choose a plastic surgeon based on price alone. Most board-certified plastic surgeons will charge a competitive rate for liposuction, and you certainly don't want an uncertified doctor performing such an important surgery. That being said, some surgeons may unnecessarily inflate their costs. While the staff at Feagin & Owen has extensive experience with insurance companies and their approval requirements, liposuction is considered purely cosmetic, so any costs will fall to the patient. However, there are financing options available so you can defer some of the expense to a later date. The total cost varies for each patient due to the nature of the surgery, but most liposuctions at Feagin & Owen cost just $2,800 for the first area with a $1,000 discount for each additional area. Please remember that plastic surgery in general is much more affordable today than it was in past decades, and our financing includes a no interest option for approved credit.
