Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia is a condition that affects more than a third of the total male population in the world. It does not pose a threat to one’s health but it may impose the feeling of humiliation or embarrassment which can impair one’s self-confidence. Fortunately, there are treatments that come in the forms of medication or surgery which both have been proven to be effective.

What is Gynecomastia?

Men who suffer from gynecomastia, have enlarged glandular tissue in their breast. It can be present in one breast or both breast and can develop at any age. This condition may result from a hormonal imbalance due to an excess of estrogens (female hormones) when compared to androgens (male hormones). It is common for this condition to occur during infancy or during puberty in normal-developing boys. It may resolve on its own but if it doesn’t then there could be an underlying medical condition needing to be treated. Heredity, drug use, and obesity can also cause this condition to develop. Gynecomastia can be treated with the use of medications or breast reduction surgery.

How to treat Gynecomastia?

Medications are used for Gynecomastia treatment but are most effective in the early stages since scarring occurs after about 12 months. After the tissue has become scarred, surgical removal is the most effective treatment for Gynecomastia. Less invasive techniques such as liposuction may be used to treat gynecomastia that resulted from an excess fatty tissue. However, Liposuction does not remove the glandular tissue. For more severe cases, surgical tissue excision is required to achieve optimal results. Patients with stretched, sagging skin around the breast usually require this approach as it allows cosmetic surgeons to remove a greater amount of glandular tissue and/or skin that can not be treated with liposuction alone.

Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia surgery can have numerous benefits for these men. The biggest benefit from the surgery is its permanence. The tissue that caused the breast to look larger than it should is removed. This can be a permanent solution as long as a healthy lifestyle is maintained, otherwise weight gain will cause the breast tissues to enlarge. Men also gain confidence in themselves that they have been lacking and feel more comfortable with their bodies.

Things You Should Consider Before Gynecomastia Surgery

Before committing to this gynecomastia surgery, men need to consider that the condition may come back if weight gain occurs. Committing to a healthy lifestyle after the surgery will keep the weight off and the results maintained. Surgery also leads to scarring which could be a visual reminder for some men that they once gynecomastia. Although the scar may be worth it to achieve the desired effects of surgery.
